Episode 28: Pariyerum Perumal

In this episode we talk about one of 2018’s best Indian films, Mari Selvaraj’s Pariyerum Perumal. And to discuss this tale of a youth’s struggle with the power dynamics fueled by caste hegemony we are joined by guest Vijeta Kumar (@rumlolarum on Twitter).

I can totally relate the “PLATE” thingy Deepak spoke about and I’m glad the plateism was removed from my home before I had the knowledge to question about it.
Vijetha’s view on this movie was really informative in some places and I appreciate the “Response” you were talking about.
@Anantha- Saar are you too from the college in Thirumalaisamudram?

Prasanth: Thanks for the kind words. And yes, Anantha is indeed from there, but from an era long past.

Sam: Thanks for linking to that song.

One of the person in this discussion asks why paraiyan is refusing to be protected by the people who are trying to protect him. These bunch of guys identify themself in the very start of the movie as same caste as pariyan. Now pariyan is in a dilemma whether to respond to casteism by becoming a casteist. This dilemma can also be seen when his village people (same caste as him) ask whether he wants help.

Yes. That’s a very valid point, I think we touch upon this very briefly in how Pariyan responds to caste. Thank you for listening!
